Osceola County

Named for the Native American leader Osceola (meaning singer of the black drink), Osceola County was created in the late 1800s partly from Orange and Brevard Counties with Kissimmee established as the county seat. It is a little known fact that until the early 1900s, Osceola County extended south to Lake Okeechobee, making it even larger than it is today. According to the 2000 census, the population of this county was about 175,000. By the end of 2012 it exceeded 288,000. That represnets over 1000 new residents each month for the past 12 years!

The Osceola County Courthouse is located at 2 Courthouse Square, which is actually on Bryan Street, between Rose Avenue and Beaumont Avenue. The large five story building replaced the older courthouse located across the street. The old courthouse is one of, if not the oldest, courthouses still in use in the United States.
