Legally, marijuana is ranked as one of the least important drugs, and thus it carries some of the smallest penalties. On the other end of the scale are drugs like heroin and cocaine, which are considered much more dangerous and carry much greater legal punishments. The two types of drugs that Hal Uhrig and The Defense Group consider “drugs du jour” (due to their relative popularity) are methamphetamines and analgesics.
Possession of drugs is considered less punishable than conspiracy to deal drugs, which is less punishable than selling drugs. In the case of the latter two, location is important; the penalties are harsher for dealing drugs near a school, church, or similar protected place. Amount also matters; the more a person sells, the worse his or her punishment will be.
